IDC Announces Innovators in the 2018 Relational Database Software Market

IDC (International Data Corporation) has recognized Clustrix, Cockroach Labs, NuoDB and Splice Machine as IDC Innovators for Dynamically Scalable and Modifiable Relational Database Software in 2018.

Emerging vendors that generate more than $100 million in revenue and have demonstrated an innovative business model or technology are considered IDC Innovators.

Relational database management systems (RDBMS) are a group of programs that allow businesses to create, maintain, administer, and interact with a relational database. Enterprise level RDBMSs typically use SQL to access the database.

The RDBMS helps companies gain flexibility and scalability in the technologies they use. It enhances the usefulness of complex real-time data analysis and supports Transaction Analytics Processing (ATP). ATP is a combination of online transaction processing (OLTP) and online analytical processing (OLAP).

According to IDCtechnologies developed by IDC innovators provide all the benefits expected from RDBMS, and additionally provide support for dynamically changing resources and schemas, as well as extending databases across multiple clusters and regions.

“It is often stated as an article of faith that relational databases cannot scale, but nothing in the concept of relational databases supports this assertion”, noted Carl Olofsonvice president of research for data management software at IDC. “A new class of RDBMS has overcome flexibility and scalability hurdles and also supports dynamically adding or removing resources such as CPU capacity (nodes) and storage or dynamically changing the schema without interrupting database operations.”

Clustrix is known for its scalable database called ClustrixDB which scales the database horizontally by adding cores and servers using a no-share architecture. It moves the query to the data, rather than moving the data to the query.

Cockroach Labs provides the SQL database for cloud services through CockroachDB. CockroachDB helps companies simplify the process of running a distributed database by automatically adapting, rebalancing and repairing data.

While, NuoDB is an elastic SQL database company for hybrid cloud applications. The NuoDB database system can run on containers, virtual machines, and in on-premises, public, and hybrid cloud environments.

Splice Machine disrupts the world of traditional databases with a hybrid data platform that unifies streaming, analytics, and transactions into a single relational database system, eliminating the latency, cost, and complexity of support for modern Big Data applications.
