EDB Launches BigAnimal PostgreSQL Cloud Database Service

EDB said today that its PostgreSQL database cloud-as-a-service offering on Microsoft Azure is generally available.

The new database service, which EDB has dubbed BigAnimal, offers users a managed PostgreSQL EDB cloud database for the first time.

As of today, EDB’s platform is available on premise and users can also install and run it themselves in the cloud.

EDB, known as EnterpriseDB until 2020, creates a commercially distributed platform that extends the open source PostgreSQL database with Oracle database compatibility features. The name BigAnimal refers to the elephant – a large animal – this is the PostgreSQL logo. project.

With the launch of its PostgreSQL cloud DBaaS, EDB enters a competitive market. Several vendors already offer support for PostgreSQL in the cloud today, including Aiven, AWS, Instaclustr, and Google.

IDC analyst Carl Olofson noted that there are several levels of decision making involved in choosing a cloud database service.

One decision is whether the organization wants to be tied to a specific cloud platform or have a service that it can use similarly across multiple cloud platforms. Another question is whether the organization needs advice, training and guidance, areas where EDB stands out.

EDB employees are the main contributors to the PostgreSQL project, and EDB sponsors user meetings focused not only on EDB products, but also open source PostgreSQL, with user experience sessions and training sessions focused on open source technology.

“EDB employees are the main contributors to the PostgreSQL project, and EDB sponsors user meetings focused not only on EDB products, but also open source PostgreSQL, with user experience sessions and training sessions focused on open source technology, ”Olofson said. “For me, this means that if the advice and support dimension is important, we have to take a close interest in the EDB solution.

Olofson added that many PostgreSQL users have considerable experience working with EDB, which may also influence their choice.

EDB PostgreSQL DBaaS offers cloud flexibility

One of the reasons EDB is now launching its own DBaaS is that many of the provider’s customers are already in the cloud.

EDB CEO Ed Boyajian said 40% of the provider’s customers themselves run and manage EDB PostgreSQL in the cloud. He noted that customers are increasingly asking EDB to offer a managed PostgreSQL DBaaS and the BigAnimal version is the result.

BigAnimal is a PostgreSQL database that EDB deploys and maintains for its customers. The service works in an organization’s customer account, initially on Microsoft Azure. This means the organization has more direct control over storage and compute resources, Boyajian said.

“Customers take full advantage of all of their negotiated rates with cloud providers and we do not mark the underlying network, compute or storage in any way,” Boyajian said. “So with our BigAnimal cloud service, they only pay for the infrastructure based on how they negotiated those terms with their cloud provider. “

From Microsoft Azure, directed to multi-cloud

The initial release of BigAnimal is on Azure, with plans for the service to be available on other public cloud providers in 2022.

As support for multiple clouds rolls out, Boyajian said organizations will be able to manage cloud deployments with a unified dashboard.

“Much of the management infrastructure we’ve built around our launch on Azure will apply to all clouds,” Boyajian said. “Thus, we will allow our customers to manage their PostgreSQL deployments, from a single glass window. “
