Database Administrator – Gauteng Johannesburg North

A leading global systems integrator and managed services provider has a vacancy for a Database Administrator to take responsibility for the performance, integrity and security of large databases and processes and more complex.
Purpose of the role:
The Database Administrator operates within in-house IT or Customer Service departments and takes responsibility for the performance, integrity and security of large and more complex databases and processes. . Individuals in this position assume responsibility for the design, implementation and administration of Oracle database management systems.

Database administrators work closely with system administrators, change control, release management, service delivery management, capacity and availability management to establish user requirements, monitor user access and security

They install, administer and maintain database servers, control access authorizations, administer complex databases, ensure optimal performance and guarantee the recoverability of databases in the event of a disaster.

Qualifications/Professional Certifications:

  • Matric, Diploma, Bachelor’s degree, in Computer Science/Information Technology, or equivalent

  • Oracle database certification and knowledge of Unix, advantageous storage subsystems

  • Excellent communicator and high level of English language proficiency – speaking, reading and writing.

  • Ability to create and maintain strong working relationships with colleagues and clients.

Basic experience and skills:

  • Experience as a senior database administrator.

  • Experience in Cloud Hyperscalers (Oracle OCI, AWS & Azure) advantageous

  • Core Database Administration: administration, maintenance, performance optimization, security, backup and recovery, high availability

  • Experience with Oracle Data Guard (DG), Oracle Real Application Cluster (RAC)

  • Knowledge of Unix and PL/SQL scripts advantageous

  • Experience in engineering systems from Oracle, Oracle Exadata, Oracle Supercluster advantageous

  • Experience in platform and database migrations

  • Oracle

  • Minimum 6 years of experience as a database administrator on Oracle at a senior position

  • A solid understanding of basic database administration

  • Experience in designing and implementing high availability and disaster recovery solutions:

  • Oracle RAC and Oracle DataGuard

  • Experience in database migrations and administration across multiple platforms

  • A solid understanding of Windows, Unix/Linux and Solaris operating systems

  • Strong understanding of Oracle Rman backup and restore.

  • Consulting businesses in database environments as well as architecting solutions to customer requirements and ensuring that solutions are designed to customer specifications and requirements

  • Ability to provide on-call and 24/7 DBA support when needed

Business process:

  • Perform database administration, maintenance, performance tuning, security, and troubleshooting

  • Provide daily health check reports

  • Develop, maintain, execute and test database backup and recovery strategies and procedures

  • Perform database installations, configurations, upgrades and migrations

  • Provide proactive performance monitoring and capacity planning for future database and server growth – Develop and maintain database best practices documentation.

  • Administer and maintain database and user security policies and standards, including compliance with SOX regulations

  • Work closely and effectively and maintain good relationships with DBA team members and internal software development, project management, quality assurance and system administration teams

  • Support strategic decision making for the technology base

  • Design, evaluate and recommend best practices for database models and architecture

  • Manage security standards and policies, database objects, and backup/recovery

  • Monitor capacity and performance, proactively troubleshoot and resolve a wide variety of issues. Establish and maintain automation standards, procedures and strategies for tools and monitoring

  • Participate or lead the development of small projects and ensure their timely delivery

  • Participate and contribute to the team development process

  • Act as a liaison between database administration staff, project development staff and the functional team

  • Research and evaluate new database trends and technologies and provide best practices and recommendations

  • Mentor less experienced team members in technology and process.

  • Keep abreast of the latest developments in database technologies and share knowledge with the team.
