Database Administrator – Gauteng Bedfordview

You will be responsible for operational support, maintenance, testing and some project activities for our client’s business application environment. The position combines responsibility for analytics with strong hands-on technical expertise and management of SQL and reporting environments. The database administrator will be called upon to assist the support team with queries as needed. The Database Administrator is also responsible for guiding the application team and vendors to ensure adherence to service levels, end-user satisfaction and continuous service improvement, as well as compliance processes and the technical management of applications on a daily basis.

Qualifications and experience

  • Tech, B.Com or B.Sc. Computer Science or Information Systems or B.Eng (Advantageous)
  • Knowledge of project management principles (PMBOK, Prince II, Agile) would be an asset
  • Experience with theoretical and practical aspects of application management and database administration as well as report writing
  • Direct work experience as a database administrator (5 years)
  • In-depth knowledge of the MS-SQL platform and Postgre
  • Knowledge of Linux advantageous
  • Good understanding of replication and availability groups (always-on)
  • Good understanding of SQL and report writing

Key performance areas

  • Provides delivery and support to the IT Application Manager to ensure stability, maintenance and improvement of the environment
  • Assesses user needs to provide proactive support and service, including analyzing opportunities to leverage the potential of the current application suite and environment
  • Communicates system and environmental issues within the department and collaborates with other teams and vendors on changes, fixes and updates
  • Assist in the process of releasing changes to the environment, which includes effective department-wide and end-user-wide communication
  • Manages test scripts and identifies opportunities for improvement within the environment Provides regular individual feedback to all team members and the IT Application Manager
  • Continuously evaluates service ticket content and makes recommendations on end user staff development
  • Manages delivery and SLAs by guiding incident resolution, problem management, maintenance, and enhancement tickets generated by end users, business, or vendors for assigned applications and environment
  • Develops relevant metrics, measures and publishes the performance of the services provided and enables continuous improvement activities in collaboration with peer groups
  • Works closely with all other IT staff to identify, assess, select and implement specific processes and technologies that support corporate IT plans and strategy
  • Ensure full compliance with policies and procedures consistent with industry and regulatory policies
  • Develops and assists with process documentation for IT systems and services, including related interfaces and third-party applications
  • Keeps abreast of new developments and forecasts future trends in the area of ​​SQL, databases, disaster recovery, infrastructure, applications and integration in the insurance industry
  • Maintains a solid understanding of technology and its application to achieve business objectives, including application management best practices
  • Prepares analyzes and/or proposals for other departments if necessary
  • Acts as an internal consultant to other IT management staff and the wider business as needed
  • Develops and maintains an effective daily checklist for environmental management
  • Provides ongoing environment and application troubleshooting, support, and maintenance, including after-hours standby if needed
  • Assists the Application Manager in the planning and implementation of environmental projects
  • Help with the content of project status reports and general project summaries
  • Coordinates the housekeeping of the environment and ensures that the environment is always in an audit-ready state
  • Ensures daily tasks including backups are completed successfully and on schedule and takes proactive responsibility for coordinating issues with the business and provides regular feedback on failed processes after hours.
  • Reports anomalies in a timely and proactive manner, i.e. disk space growth, database locks, database indexing and tuning requirements, etc.
  • Plans, schedules and tracks incidents and change request timelines
  • Monitors and reports progress of own project deliverables to appropriate stakeholders and keeps Application Manager informed
  • Meet agreed SLAs and maintain high levels of customer service at all times
