Database Administrator at Idol Consulting Firm (PTY) Ltd

Job objectives:

  • Installation, support and maintenance of Oracle databases.
  • Responsible for the availability and performance of databases that underpin core banking, credit and payment systems.
  • Creating primary database storage structures and objects.
  • Modification of the structure of the database.
  • Work with the team to ensure associated hardware resources are allocated to databases and to ensure high availability and optimal performance.
  • System storage allocation and planning for future storage needs for all database systems.
  • Responsible for improving and maintaining databases to include deployment and upgrades.
  • Responsible for implementing and releasing database changes submitted by the development team.
  • Install and upgrade database, clients and application development programs.
  • Implement/maintain security policy standards with respect to database maintenance, security and archiving.
  • Review/recommend security standards.
  • Database monitoring.
  • Proactively monitor and optimize the performance of database systems to ensure secure services with minimal downtime.
  • Control and monitor user access to the database.
  • Review and maintain disaster recovery for the database environment.
  • Ensures that procedures and documentation for a seamless transition to disaster recovery are up to date.
  • Backups and Patches.
  • Planning for backup and recovery of the database environment.
  • Responsible for installing and maintaining patches and releases.
  • Reporting and customer relations.
  • Liaise with customers on calls that are routed through the IT help desk.
  • Ensure customer satisfaction before closing incidents.
  • Complete and accurate report.
  • Responsible for providing trend analysis to the management team to enable them to make informed decisions regarding the management of database resources.
  • Provide technical documentation relevant to the database environment

Qualifications, experience and skills required:

  • At least five years’ experience as an Oracle database administrator is essential.
  • Computer science degree is essential.
  • Experience with other database environments, preferably Microsoft SQL and Sybase ASE, will be advantageous.
  • Knowledge of computer networks and operating systems.
  • Hands-on experience in monitoring and tuning Oracle database to provide high availability service
  • Hands-on experience in managing internal and external Oracle database security.
  • Experience working in a 24/7 business environment.
  • Hands-on experience in monitoring and tuning a database to provide high availability service.
  • Ability to communicate at all levels of the company.
  • Analytical skills.
  • Fundamental skills of Unix and Linux operating systems.
  • Good record of reliability, precision, loyalty and responsibility.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Must be available to be on call and work many overtime hours.
